New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)

NZQA ensures that New Zealand qualifications are valued as credible and robust both nationally and internationally.

Before you can apply for teacher registration in New Zealand, your qualifications may need to be assessed by NZQA. If any of your qualifications are not on the pre-approved overseas teaching qualifications list they’ll conduct an International Qualifications Assessment (IQA) that compares your qualifications to those listed on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.

This step is vital, and it’s important you undertake this process before you leave your home country.

First, see if your teaching qualifications are on the pre-approved overseas teaching qualifications list and your other non-teaching qualifications meet the requirements for the pre-approved list. If you have qualifications that aren’t on the list, you’ll need to get an IQA for each one.

There are three pathways through the process:

  • Pre-approved Overseas Teaching Qualification pathway
    N/A
    $0 NZD

If your teaching qualifications are on the pre-approved overseas teaching qualifications list and your other non-teaching qualifications meet the requirements for the pre-approved list then you don’t need to make an IQA application with NZQA – you can simply include the qualifications in your application for your teacher registration, work visa and salary assessment. Please note that if you’re applying for a residency visa and your qualification is on the pre-approved overseas teaching qualifications list, an IQA may still be required – check your visa type for details of the documentation you will need to provide.

  • IQA Comparable Outcome pathway
    < 35 working days
    $746 NZD

This means that the IQA identifies that your qualifications contain expected core knowledge components in a New Zealand initial teacher education programme.

You’ll need to provide the following documents:

    • Award certificate
    • Transcript/ academic record
    • Passport bio-data page
    • Evidence of name change (if applicable)
    • English translations of documents (if applicable)
    • Syllabus of the pre-programme (at the time of your study)

For further details on the documents required for an IQA, visit the NZQA website.

  • IQA Non-comparable Outcome pathway
    < 35 working days
    $746 NZD

A non-comparable outcome means that your qualifications do not include the expected core knowledge components of a New Zealand initial teacher education programme, and further assessment will be necessary before you’ll be able to teach in New Zealand. The Education Council carries out this assessment, if your IQA is non-comparable contact them to discuss the various registration pathways.

You’ll need to provide the following documents:

    • Award certificate
    • Transcript/ academic record
    • Passport bio-data page
    • Evidence of name change (if applicable)
    • English translations of documents (if applicable)
    • Syllabus of the pre-programme (at the time of your study)

For further details on the documents required for an IQA, visit the NZQA website.
